Whether you are a parent trying to prepare your child to be the best student they can be, or whether you are a student, gathering life skills to enhance your performance, here are some suggestions...
Be sure to get 8 to 9 hours of sleep each night. Try to keep a consistent bedtime and wake-up time.
Eat a well balanced diet of mainly fruits and vegetables, in addition to proteins, grains, and dairy. Avoid vending machine snacks.
On the mornings of tests, do not eat a breakfast unlike you would normally eat. If you usually eat a twinkie and a coke, do not change your routine.
Drink water. Lots of water. Avoid dark and/or carbonated beverages.
Plan to get at least thirty minutes of cardiovascular exercise each day. Pair your cardiovascular exercise with weight training or a toning exercise like yoga multiple times a week, if at all possible.
Set aside at least one hour a night to complete homework and work on projects. Try not to get behind!
Spend time together as a family. Play a board game, basketball, do homework together, cook dinner or bake cookies together, go out to dinner, or rent a movie.
Try to have one technology-free day a week (if you can!) Avoid TV, texting, and video games. Spend time outside!
Try to read one book for pleasure and non-school purposes per month.
Plan ahead when it comes to standardized testing. Begin taking the ACT or SAT as early as you can so that you have plenty of time to take it multiple times until you have achieved your desired score.
Have fun! Spend time with your friends, go to the mall and the movie theater, go laser tagging, go to concerts, play football, etc. Spend time not worrying about the future or college plans.
